Clifford the Big Red Dog, of course.

This delightful children's book series has been winning over hearts young and old since 1963, including mine, though a little later than its original release. Even the 2021 film was so vibrant and heartwarming, Dennie and I have seen it at least two or three times, despite its five-to-eight-year-old demographic--an age range so distant for both of us, we wouldn't be able to spot it with a first-rate telescope while perched upon the back of a twenty-five-foot-tall pouncing puppy. I loved all animals as a little girl (I still do), but Clifford kicked off a lifelong love affair with canine companions. Coincidentally, the first rescue dog I adopted was both big and red. Every time we walked down the street together, the children in my Pennsylvania neighborhood--without any encouragement from me--took to calling him The Big Red Dog as they ran toward us and threw their arms around my Jake. They loved him, the way Emily Elizabeth loved Clifford. I loved him even more.

Clifford kindly requests a belly rub.

And so it is no wonder that, when I spied this treat-holding Clifford plush, I could not resist introducing the playfully iconic character to my own child, furry though she may be. Dressed in her pink, fluffy hoodie, our special Valentine was in for an extraordinary day. Gathered in a cozy space, atop a soft ivory blanket, introductions were made between our dog and the newcomer. I believe Maisie would have adored Clifford instantly regardless, but the sweet potato cookie we'd tucked into his paws certainly didn't hurt. After a period of play and cuddles, our girl eagerly abandoned her fiery-furred friend for pre-lunch walkies. (Sorry, Clifford--nothing gets between Maisie and her outdoor explorations.) Then we escorted one thrilled shepherd-beagle out a second time, right before dinner, investigating new sights and scents in a less-traveled direction. Lunch was served with a few morsels of fresh chicken, while a sprinkle of shredded parmesan garnished our pup's holiday dinner. Later that evening, we treated our baby to a doggie-safe ice cream as well. Ice cream is, after all, the ultimate love language. And Miss Maisie Moon, like her siblings before her, she is the ultimate love.

What's big and reddish and tread all over? Why, that would be our precious, pampered Valentine--The Amazing Maisie, of course.
